December Alumni Spotlight: Emily Stewart
Our December Alumni Spotlight shines on Emily Shearer Stewart, 2006 Honors Scholar. Emily graduated cum laude from EKU with a bachelor’s degree in English and completed her Honors Thesis titled, “Star Trek and Social Commentary.” She went on to complete an MA in English from EKU in 2008 and a Ph.D. in British Literature from Middle Tennessee State University in 2014. While at MTSU, Emily received several awards, including the William R. Wolfe Graduate Writing Award (2010-2011), the Richard C. and Virginia Peck Award (2011-2012), and the John N. McDaniel Award for Excellence in Teaching (2011-2012). Currently, Emily is employed as an assistant professor of English at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, TX. There, she teaches composition and literature.
Emily is part of a family of Honors scholars. Her brother Steven graduated from the Honors Program in December of 2006, and her brother Sam will graduate as an Honors Scholar in 2015. Emily married fellow Honors alum Shane Stewart (2009) in 2010, and her brother-in-law, Shad Stewart, also graduated from the Honors Program in 2005.
Favorite Honors Memory: “My very first honors function was before my first semester began. I was sitting next to a girl named Kate, and when we were all introducing ourselves, she announced that she was from Mars and she was at EKU to study underwater basket-weaving. Twelve years later, we're still best friends.”
Advice for Honors Students: “Make friends with the professors. Have lunch with them. Help them with their projects. You will learn tons from them in class, but let those discussions continue out of the classroom. We learned more sitting in an impromptu lecture session at lunchtime in the Powell cafeteria than we might have ever learned in a classroom--but we had to be willing to take the time to listen.
