Conferences

Return to Current Students

Each year, EKU Honors travels to four conferences. Students who have a proposal accepted for presentation at these conferences travel to these events at minimal cost (typically only a few meals; major expenses – transportation, registration, hotel – are covered by the Honors). EKU Honors consistently brings one of the largest, if not the largest, student contingent to each of these conferences.  If you have questions about conferences after reviewing the material on this page, please contact Dr. Minh Nguyen, Associate Director of EKU Honors.

What conferences does EKU Honors attend?

Kentucky Honors Roundtable (KHR)
KHR is the state association of honors programs and colleges.  Conferences are held once each semester, typically late February and mid- to late-September, and are hosted by each school on a rotating basis.  The typical conference includes dinner and social activities on Friday evening, followed by a program of student presentations on Saturday.  The next KHR will be held at Northern Kentucky University in Fall 2017.

  • Posters and panel presentations are accepted
  • Next EKU proposal deadline: September 2017

Southern Regional Honors Council (SRHC)
SRHC is the regional association of honors programs and colleges to which we belong.  A regional conference is held each spring.  Proposals for this conference are usually submitted in January before the conference.  The next conference will be held in Washington, D.C. in Spring 2018.

  • Posters and panel presentations are accepted
  • Next EKU proposal deadline: January 2018

National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC)
NCHC is the national association of honors programs and colleges to which we belong.  A national conference is held each fall, typically in October or November.  Proposals for this conference are usually submitted in February before the conference.  Future conferences will be held in Atlanta, GA (2017) and Boston, MA (2018).

Attending a Conference
The first step in attending a conference is writing and submitting a conference proposal.  Watch your EKU email and "This Week in Honors" for information on upcoming conferences.  Dr. Minh Nguyen, Associate Director of EKU Honors, leads our conference preparation and sends many emails and announcements about conferences well in advance of the proposal due dates.

In preparation for NCHC, EKU Honors traditionally holds two idea brainstorming sessions at the beginning of the spring semester.  These are open to any Honors student who is interested in submitting a proposal, even if they are not sure about a topic.  Brainstorming sessions are a great time to get together with other Honors students and bounce ideas back and forth.

Conference Proposals
Conference proposal guidelines, forms, and deadlines are sent via email by Dr. Minh Nguyen well in advance of each conference.  Below are some sample proposal forms, as well as some examples of proposals that were accepted to NCHC in previous years.  In addition, we've included sample posters and information on creating posters as well.
